In January 2004, The Asahi Shimbun Company was the first Japanese media organization to join the UN Global Compact (UNGC). Since then, The Asahi Shimbun has published many articles and organized a symposium concerning the UNGC.
In 2005, to celebrate of the United Nations 60th anniversary, The Asahi Shimbun held a symposium called Global Citizens Summit - what we can do to build a sustainable society in collaboration with the UNGC. More than three hundreds people attended the symposium, which was held in the UN House U Thant Hall in Tokyo. The UNGC executive director and presidents of UNCG participating entities exchanged various ideas and discussed specific actions to build a sustainable society and companies of the future. We carried articles concerning this symposium in The Asahi Shimbun newspaper on December 19, 2005.
